GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING TASK: MALES VS. FEMALES

Abstract


Writing is connected to grammatical understanding inasmuch as it is a process of combining words into sentences and arranging sentences to construct paragraphs. Yet, the fact that the first and foreign languages’ rules are dissimilar seems to cause learners to commit errors in English writing. Males and females are said to differ in language performance; they might produce different types of error in different frequencies. To achieve the aforementioned purpose, this descriptive study attempts to compare the types of grammatical errors dominantly found in writing task of male and female students of one of senior high school Banda Aceh. In this research, the framework of James (2013), Murrow (2004) and Jayasundara & Premarathna (2011) taken into consideration. The grammatical errors subcategories on focus are subject-verb agreements, verb form, singular/plural form, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, and article. Ten pieces of male students’ writing and ten pieces of female students’ were randomly selected. The result showed that the seven subcategories were found in male students’ writing while only six of those subcategories occurred in females’. Furthermore, the total of errors in female students’ writing was less than those in male students’. Hence, female students can be assumed as careful writers than male students. Being aware of the learners’ most frequent errors in the process of language learning and focus their attention on the features may contribute in the learning process. Likewise, advance study suggested examining other types of linguistics features in the context of writing ability of EFL learners through gender based.
