Character Values in Doda Idi Poem: A Semiotics Study

Abstract


One of the oral traditions that is still developing in Acehnese society is the Doda Idi poem. Doda Idi is a poem sung by the Acehnese society as a cradle song to lull their children to sleep. This study aims to examine the character values contained in the Doda Idi poem. This study was conducted using Peirce’s theory of semiotic analysis. The poem’s lyrics were chosen as the data source in this study. Data in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences were collected by reading and note-taking techniques. Then, the data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. The study results revealed that the character values in the do da idi poems consisted of courage, independence, respect, caring, honesty, and national spirit. These character values are important values that require to be instilled in future generations; thus, the nation’s nationalism does not experience a shift due to the globalization impact.
