The Technology Impact: Students’ Ability in Writing Narrative Text Using Story Jumper Web

Abstract


One of the most difficult tasks for English language learners is writing. Based on pre-observation, it was found that English Education Department students were not excited about writing activities. It needs a long thinking process. Whereas a good writing skill has an important role in academic success. Therefore, the learning media selected by the teacher in a writing class should be appropriate and interesting. Story jumper is a web that is used as a tool for creating digital storybooks. It is completed by the template, adding text, and characters to help the user create the story. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using Story Jumper Web to improve English language learners' writing skills. Pretest, treatment, and posttest were used in this pre-experimental study with one group design. The research sample was obtained through a total sampling process from the second semester at Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo University. There were 26 students in total.  The data was collected by narrative text written by the students, and it was analyzed by using a writing test rubric. The findings indicated the effectiveness of using the story jumper web to improve English language learners' writing skills.  It was represented by the increase in the mean score between the pretest (56,92) and the posttest (82,69). There is an improvement of 45,1% of the students’ mean score after getting treatment. Besides, the t-test value indicated a significant difference. Because of this, Ho is rejected but Ha is accepted. It suggested that the optimal learning environment in writing class can be created by using a story jumper.
