OBSERVING AN ENGLISH CLASSROOM: TEACHING POETRY AND POEM AT FATIH BILINGUAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BANDA ACEH

Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the process of the implementation of teaching poetry and poem in term of pre-activity, main-activity, and post-activity (Brewster, 2002). The qualitative study is employed for the study. The instruments of the study are observation sheet and video recorder. This study observes an English teacher teaching poetry and poem at SD Teuku Nyak Arif Fatih Bilingual School Banda Aceh. The data of the study was analyzed qualitatively using technique which was adopted from Mile and Huberman (1994). The result reveal that the process of implementation of teaching poetry and poem: (i) in the pre-activity, the teacher implemented the warm up activities such as recalling the last lesson or material, picking up the theme of the lesson and introducing the topic to the students, (ii) in the main-activity, the teacher implemented some activities such as studying together with students, teaching the student the process of drafting of the poetry and poem, asking the students to read aloud, learning the verse of the poetry and writing the new verse, delivering various poetry and poems to the students, fostering active participation of the students through the interaction of the teacher and students, and responding positively to students’ participation and responses, providing systematic feedback and corrections, and correcting the wrong answer and appreciating them who answer correctly, and (iii) in the post-activity, the teacher reviewed material by asking them questions.
