VARIOUS FUNCTIONS AND SYMBOLIC MEANING OF BEHAS WITHIN DAYAK NGAJU COMMUNITIES IN CENTRAL KALIMANTAN

Abstract


Behas or rice besides as main food among Ngaju Dayak people in Central Kalimantan also has a transcendental value in cultural ritual ceremonies. In the life of the Ngaju Dayak in Central Kalimantan, rice is believed to be a symbol of a deity who has a role as an ambassador in conveying human requests to the Supreme Being, Ranying Mahattala. Besides that, rice is also a symbol of prosperity and hope. Thus, rice in Dayak culture does not only function as a basic food ingredient but also has a symbolic meaning. The use of rice can be seen in various Ngaju Dayak rituals both in life rituals and in rituals of death. In some rituals, rice plays an important role in accordance with its dynamic function and meaning.
