Journal History
In 2004, a devastating Indian Ocean tsunami caused widespread destruction and loss of life. Recognizing the importance of disaster mitigation and research, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) established the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) in 2016. TDMRC collaborated with international networks to develop disaster risk reduction and management strategies.
In 2017, the International Journal of Disaster Management (IJDM) was launched. As a peer-reviewed, open-access journal, IJDM focuses on advanced disaster risk reduction (DRR), local practices, indigenous knowledge, and culture related to DRR. The journal published its first volume and edition, addressing issues such as early warning and reducing human exposure to hazards.
Since its inception, IJDM has been dedicated to publishing high-quality research. In 2021, the journal began publishing three annual issues, providing a platform for debates and critical thinking on topics related to humans and disasters. The TDMRC of Universitas Syiah Kuala manages the journal, ensuring it continues publishing original and innovative research articles.
