Author Guidelines

Journal of Academic Medicine and Health Sciences (JAMHS) only publishes original reports to avoid plagiarism, including self-plagiarism. The manuscripts must be written in good American English. To ensure the correct scientific use of English, it is recommended to use a provisional English language editing service. Please note that all manuscripts will be screened during the submission or peer-review process. The Editorial Board reserves the right to edit all articles for style, format, and clarity. Authors may be asked to revise their manuscripts for any reason. Manuscripts with excessive errors may be returned to authors for retyping or may be rejected. All manuscripts will undergo peer and editorial review.

JAMHS accepts three types of articles 

  1. Original Research (Basic, Clinical, Community Research or Academic Medicine)
  2. Case Report / Case Series
  3. Review Article

GENERAL FORMATTING GUIDELINES 

--------------------------------------------------

Text - Manuscripts must be prepared in Microsoft word (DOC, DOCX) format. Articles should be written in 5-7 pages, single column, in times new roman 10th using single line spacing. 

Tables - Tables may be prepared in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel and must be embedded in the word-processing file. Authors are asked to follow these guidelines: (1) Number tables consecutively using Arabic numerals. (2) Include a descriptive heading that explains the table. (3) Give footnotes a letter designation, and cite in the table by italic superscript letters, labelling sequentially by lines of the table.

Graphics - The preferred submission procedure is to embed graphic files in the word-processing document near the point where they should appear in the final publication. Separate graphic files may also be included with the submission package. The document settings should be in RGB mode. 

Colours - Choose colours that will allow all features to be clearly visible on white paper, and format in RGB colour mode. The RGB requirements are essential for producing high-quality graphics within the published manuscript. 

Naming & Numbering - Name your graphics Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. (Arabic numerals), consecutively, and for figures not embedded in the text, place a call-out in the main manuscript text where the graphic should be located. Boldface Arabic numerals should be used for numbering structures. 

References - References should be listed numerically in the text in the order of appearance in APA 7th style using Mendeley citation Reference Manager. Abbreviations of journals should conform to those used in Medline. References should be written as the following:

STRUCTURE OF THE MANUSCRIPTS 

--------------------------------------------------

Structures of the manuscripts refer to the type of submitted articles. 

A. ORIGINAL RESEARCH

Should comply with the following structure: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Methods & Materials, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion.

  • Abstract - Should be concise and written in no more than 250 words, containing background, research objectives, methods & materials, results, and conclusion of the study. 
  • Keywords - Consists of 3-5 words or groups of words, written alphabetically. Choose words that best present the manuscripts, do not merely duplicate words from the title.
  • Introduction - Explaining the background, problems, importance of research, brief literature review that relates directly to research or previous findings that need to be developed, and ends with a paragraph of research purposes. 
  • Methods & Materials - Contains technical information of the study presented clearly to ensure that the work can be reproduced according to the details provided. Approaches or procedures of study together with data analysis methods must be presented. If the study uses a reagent, details of the supplier should be provided when appropriate. Methods already published should be indicated by a reference and only relevant modifications should be described. For epidemiology, details of setting, time and place should be provided.
  • Results - Should be presented clearly and concisely and should contain no more than five figures and tables. Any information provided in tables and figures should not be repeated in the text, but the text should focus on the importance of the principal findings of the study. 
  • Discussion - Discusses the results of the study to address the problem formulated, objectives and research hypotheses. Discussion be focused on the why and how of the research findings can happen and to extend to which the research findings can be applied to other relevant problems instead of extensively citing and discussing existing literature. 
  • Conclusion - Should be withdrawn on the basis of research findings, formulated concerns and research purposes, and presented in one paragraph without numerical form of expression. Explain your research contributions to science.

 

B. CASE REPORT / CASE SERIES

Should comply with the following structure: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Case Presentation, Discussion, and Conclusion. The case that is reported should meet one of the following criterias:

- Unexpected or unusual presentations of a disease
- New associations or variations in disease processes
- Presentations, diagnoses and/or management of new and emerging diseases
- New approach or best practice of disease management
- An unexpected association between diseases or symptoms
- An unexpected event in the course of observing or treating a patient
- Unreported or unusual side effects or adverse interactions involving medications
- Findings that shed new light on the possible pathogenesis of a disease or an adverse effect

  • Abstract - Should be concise and written in no more than 250 words, containing Introduction, Case Presentation, and Conclusion. 

  • Keywords - Consists of 3-5 words or groups of words, written alphabetically. Choose words that best present the manuscripts, do not merely duplicate words from the title.

  • Introduction - Explains the background to the case report or study, its aims, and a summary of the existing literature.

  • Case Presentation - A description of the patient’s relevant demographic details, medical history, symptoms and signs, treatment or intervention, outcomes and any other significant details.

  • Discussion - Should discuss the relevant existing literature related to the presented case. 

  • Conclusion - Clearly states the main conclusions, including an explanation of their relevance or importance to the field.

 

C. REVIEW ARTICLE

Should comply with the following structure: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Main Text, and Conclusion. 

  • Abstract - Should be concise and written in no more than 250 words, structured with an introduction, main body of the abstract, and conclusion. 

  • Keywords - Consists of 3-5 words or groups of words, written alphabetically. Choose words that best present the manuscripts, do not merely duplicate words from the title.

  • Introduction - Explaining the background to the article, its aims, a summary of a search of the existing literature and the issue under discussion.

  • Main Text - Contains the body of the article, and may also be broken into subsections with short, informative headings.

  • Conclusion - Clearly states the main conclusions and include an explanation of their relevance or importance to the field.

ARTICLE PROCESSING CHARGES

--------------------------------------------------------------------

JAMHS is an open-access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal. To provide open access, the journal charges publication fees for each accepted article, except for invited articles. These fees cover all costs, including the peer review process, article production, publication, hosting, and archiving. Fees vary by article type.

The APC is charged on acceptance of the article and should be paid within 30 days. Payment must be received in full for the article to be published.

Research4Life

JAMHS offers full or partial equitable waivers for accepted articles from low-income and middle-income economies. Eligibility is based on the Research4Life eligibility criteria. Countries listed in Group A are eligible for the full waiver and countries listed in Group B are eligible for the partial (50%) waiver. The waiver is automatically applied based on the Corresponding Author's country information provided during submission.

There are certain waiver criteria based on the institution for the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Syiah Kuala, which are as follows:

      1. Undergraduate students: FREE
      2. Postgraduate students: 50% discount
      3. Lecturers: 50% discount.

There are certain waiver criteria for the University outside of Universitas Syiah Kuala, based on the institution. These criteria are as follows:

      1. Undergraduate students: 50% discount
      2. Postgraduate students: 25% discount
      3. Lecturers: 25% discount.

ARTICLE SELECTION AND PUBLICATION PROCESS

--------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Upon receipt of article submission, the Editor sends an email of confirmation to the corresponding author within one and two weeks. If you fail to receive this confirmation, your submission/email may be missed. The author should pay no submission charge at this stage.

  2. Peer review: We use a double-blind system for peer review; both reviewers’ and authors’ identities remain anonymous. The article will be peer-reviewed by two reviewers. The review process may take 1 - 2 months.

  3. Notification of the result of review is by e-mail.

  4. The authors revise the paper according to the feedback and suggestions by reviewers. Upon acceptance, a publication fee is to be paid by the author to the journal.

  5. After publication, the corresponding author will receive an email of notification on the e-journal in PDF that is available on the journal’s webpage, and free of charge for download.

  6. It normally takes about  2 to 3 months from submission to publication.

     

    Before starting editing based on our Author and Review Guidelines, these are the four items that we want our author to prepare and clearly state in the manuscripts:

    1. Ethical clearance register number along with a copy. If your work is a case series or case report, please send us the patient/family informed consent (in English), and fill out the ICJME form that can be found below.  
    2. Please state your conflict of interest in the paper.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF document file format.
  3. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  4. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
