Abstract

In recent years, the development of multi disciplinary studies has led to several interesting topics in soil improvement. One of most emerging topic is related to biogeotechnics. This paper discuss one of application of biogeotechnics which using Fungi-mycellium to improve the shear strength of sands. Fungi are microorganisms that require nutritions such as glucose, cellulose, and lignin protein from substances in their surrounding environment. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of adding some rice flour in Fungi-Mycelium Treated Soil (FMTS). The rice flour is expected could extend the durability of the FMTS, for example silica sand mixed with Rhizopus Oligosporus. The mixed soils shear strength were examined by Unconfied Compression Test apparatus. According to the experimental results, the maximum unconfined compression strength was 45 kPa in which the sample was cured for 5 days. The range of obtained Young’s modulus was 1077 kPa to 48 kPa, where the longer the curing time yielded a lower Young’s Modulus. To increase the durability of soil sample, adding 8% of rice flour seems a reasonable, although the unconfined compressive strength might not significantly increase. However, the sample could be more durable than no rice flour was added.
