Abstract

Tree crowns are dynamic structures composed of several segments. Each tree crown structure has different characteristics. The dynamic crown structure significantly influences the distribution of rainfall in the crown. The process of rainfall distribution in the crown was studied using a stacked micro tank model. Tank 1 is assumed to be the outermost segment of the crown. In trees with high crown density, the outermost surface of the crown contributes 49.7% to 97.2% of the total runoff. The smallest runoff occurs in tank 2, was represents the segment between leaves and twigs. Leaf characteristics play an important role in distributing water flow in the crown. The application of the micro tank model is a very flexible and easy-to-apply method to understand the rainfall distribution in the tree crown. The water flow process observed in this micro tank model can improve the understanding of the process of raindrop characteristics under the canopy during and after rainfall.
