Focus and Scope
Jurnal Teknik Sipil (Journal of Civil Engineering) Universitas Syiah Kuala is a scientific journal, published by Civil Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Syiah Kuala. It is aimed at disseminating research results related to civil engineering fields, where readers of the journal are expected from civil engineering researchers/scientists, students in related fields, engineers, and practitioners in this field.

Peer Review Process
Peer Review Policy
Jurnal Teknik Sipil is committed to upholding the standards of academic integrity and scholarly publishing. To ensure a fair and unbiased review process, this journal follows a double-anonymous peer review system for all submitted manuscripts.
Key Aspects of Our Peer Review Process:
Double-Anonymous Review: The identities of both authors and reviewers are kept confidential to ensure an impartial evaluation.
Editorial Screening: All submissions undergo an initial assessment by the editorial team to check for relevance, originality, and adherence to journal guidelines.
Expert Evaluation: Manuscripts that pass the initial screening are sent to at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the subject area.
Revision and Decision: Authors may be required to revise their manuscript based on reviewer feedback. Final publication decisions are made by the editorial board.
Ethical Standards: The journal adheres to ethical publishing guidelines, ensuring a rigorous and transparent review process.
Peer Review Process
1. The author sends or uploads an article through the Journal Website (http://jurnal.usk.ac.id/JTS/)
2. The article will be received by Editor in Chief. The Editor in Chief will decide one of member of section editor to be the editor of the manuscript based on field study of the manuscript (section editor member's field of expertise).
3. The Editor will examine the manuscript based on manuscript selection criteria script and determine whether the manuscript is Accepted or Rejected.
If the manuscript does not meet the selection criteria, the manuscript will be rejected, the editor will send it back to the author.
The authors are allowed to resend it to the journal after correcting the manuscript based on manuscript selection criteria.
If the manuscript meets the selection criteria, the editor will forward it to the reviewers to be reviewed. Between the first received paper and time to send it to the reviewers, it takes about 3-7 days (1 week).
4. There will be minimum two referees (reviewers) who will examine the paper.
They consist of a local reviewer (from Universitas Syiah Kuala) and an external reviewer (from other institution/university outside of Universitas Syiah Kuala).
Both reviewer are experts in the area of study. The reviewers will review the manuscript based on Review Form and their expertise in the field of study.
The review process takes time about 3 - 4 weeks after the manuscript received by the reviewer, and the editor is responsible for the process.
5. The result of the reviews will be sent back to the editor whether accepted with major revision or accepted with minor revision or rejected.
Based on two or three result of review, the editor decides whether the manuscript is accepted with major revision or minor revision or rejected.
5. If the article is accepted with minor revision, the author has to revise it within two weeks.
If the article is accepted with major revision, it has to be sent back to the reviewers.
6. The article that has been revised and the content is agreed by editor, it will be sent to layout editor.
7. After layouting,the journal is ready to be published.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Jurnal Teknik Sipil Universitas Syiah Kuala publishes fully open access journals, which means that all articles are available on the internet to all users immediately upon publication.
Non-commercial use and distribution in any medium is permitted, provided the author and the journal are properly credited.
Archiving
This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...
Repository Policy
Our journal allows authors to deposit the Published Version (Version of Record - VoR) in institutional or other repositories of their choice, including platforms such as ResearchGate. Below is our policy:
Submitted Version (Preprint)
Authors are not permitted to deposit the submitted (pre-review) version of their manuscript in any repository or preprint server.
Accepted Version (Author Accepted Manuscript - AAM)
Authors are not permitted to deposit the accepted version (post-peer review, before typesetting and copyediting) in any repository.
Published Version (Version of Record - VoR)
Authors are permitted to deposit the final, published version (formatted and typeset by the journal) in institutional repositories, personal websites, or academic networking sites such as ResearchGate.
Authors are encouraged to share the official DOI link to the published version.
Jurnal Teknik Sipil also maintains an official repository on this website to ensure long-term accessibility and preservation of published research. All published articles are archived and can be accessed through our repository system.
Publication Frequency
Started in May 2018, the publication period of Jurnal Teknik Sipil was slightly changed to two times in a year, i.e. in May and in November. It was started by Volume 7 No. 1, in 2018.
Publication Ethics Statement
Jurnal Teknik Sipil (Journal of Civil Engineering), Universitas Syiah Kuala is a scientific periodical published by the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Syiah Kuala, with a publication frequency of three issues per year, namely January, May, and September. Jurnal Teknik Sipil has been published since 2011, with its first issue being Volume 1, Number 1, September 2011. The Journal of Civil Engineering, Universitas Syiah Kuala, is a scientific publication containing research results in the fields of structure, transportation, geotechnics, hydraulics, and construction management engineering that have never been published elsewhere.
This scientific code of ethics statement represents all parties involved in the publication process of Jurnal Teknik Sipil, including the publisher, editors, reviewers, and authors. This statement is based on the Regulation of the Head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Number 5 of 2014 concerning the Code of Ethics for Scientific Publications. The ethics of scientific publications uphold three main ethical values:
(i) Neutrality, meaning being free from conflicts of interest in publication management;
(ii) Fairness, meaning giving authorship rights to those who are entitled as authors; and
(iii) Honesty, meaning being free from duplication, fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism (DF2P) in publication.
Duties and Responsibilities of Journal Management
- Determine the journal name, scientific scope, publication frequency, and propose accreditation when necessary. Establish the editorial board.
- Define the relationship between the publisher, editor, reviewers, and other parties in a written agreement.
- Respect confidentiality for contributing researchers, authors, editors, and reviewers.
- Apply norms and regulations concerning intellectual property rights, especially copyright.
- Review journal policies and communicate them to authors, the editorial board, reviewers, and readers.
- Provide guidelines and ethical standards of conduct for editors and reviewers.
- Publish the journal regularly.
- Ensure the availability of funding sources for the sustainability of the journal publication.
- Build a collaborative network with research institutions and related organizations.
- Prepare licensing and other legal aspects.
Duties and Responsibilities of Editors
- Bridge the needs of readers and authors while continuously improving publication quality.
- Implement processes to ensure the quality of published papers.
- Uphold freedom of opinion in an objective manner.
- Maintain the integrity of authors’ academic records.
- Provide corrections, clarifications, and apologies when necessary.
- Be responsible for the style and format of scientific papers, while the content and statements are the responsibility of the authors.
- Actively solicit opinions from authors, readers, reviewers, and editorial board members to improve publication quality.
- Conduct periodic internal evaluations of the journal’s quality.
- Support authors' initiatives on publication ethics by including clearance forms in each submission.
- Remain open-minded to new opinions or perspectives that may differ from personal views for the advancement of science.
- Avoid subjective decisions and refrain from defending personal, author, or third-party opinions by seeking scientifically accountable solutions.
- Encourage authors to improve their manuscripts until they are suitable for publication.
Duties and Responsibilities of Reviewers (Peer Reviewers)
- Review manuscripts and provide evaluations to the editor as a basis for determining the manuscript’s eligibility for publication.
- Reviewers must not review manuscripts involving themselves, directly or indirectly.
- Provide constructive suggestions, feedback, and recommendations on the scientific manuscript.
- Maintain author confidentiality by not disseminating correction results, suggestions, or recommendations.
- Encourage authors to revise their manuscripts.
- Re-review revised manuscripts according to the established standards.
- Conduct timely reviews based on the journal’s guidelines and scientific principles (data collection methods, author legitimacy, conclusions, etc.).
Duties and Responsibilities of Authors
- Ensure that all listed authors meet the criteria of authorship.
- Be collectively responsible for the work and content of the article, including methods, analysis, calculations, and details.
- Disclose sources of research funding, whether directly or indirectly.
- Explain the limitations of the research.
- Respond professionally, scientifically, and promptly to comments made by reviewers and editors.
- Notify the editor in writing if they wish to withdraw their manuscript.
- Declare that the submitted manuscript is original, has never been published elsewhere in any language, and is not under consideration for publication by another publisher.
Authors are required to fill out the Publication Ethics Statement Form to be included as an attachment file during manuscript submission.
Use of Generative AI
Jurnal Teknik Sipil (Journal of Civil Engineering), Universitas Syiah Kuala recognizes the potential and challenges of Generative AI (GenAI) in scientific writing and publishing. To ensure integrity, transparency, and originality in every publication, the journal establishes the following policy:
1. Author Responsibilities
- Full Responsibility: Authors are fully responsible for all submitted content, including its accuracy, originality, and data integrity. The use of GenAI does not diminish this responsibility.
- Not an Author: GenAI tools, Large Language Models (LLMs), or other AI-assisted technologies cannot be listed as authors, co-authors, or contributors. Authorship and credit can only be attributed to human individuals who take full responsibility for the work.
2. Permissible Uses
- Language and Readability Improvement: Authors are permitted to use GenAI to refine the language, grammar, spelling, and flow of their manuscript. These tools can help in polishing an initial draft into a more fluid and professional text, provided that the substantial content remains the author's original work.
- References and Paragraphs: GenAI may be used to assist in searching for references or structuring paragraphs, but authors must ensure that any information, facts, and arguments generated by the AI have been accurately verified and correctly cited from their original sources.
3. Prohibited Uses
- Substantial Content Generation: GenAI must not be used to generate entire manuscripts, parts of a manuscript, abstracts, or conclusions without substantial contribution from the author.
- Data and Image Manipulation: The use of GenAI to create, falsify, or manipulate data, tables, or images (unless image manipulation is an explicit part of the research method) is strictly prohibited.
- Plagiarism: Authors must not copy or reproduce text generated by GenAI without clear disclosure, as this may be considered plagiarism.
4. Disclosure Obligation
- Mandatory Disclosure: Authors are required to disclose the use of GenAI in the preparation of their manuscript.
- Location of Disclosure: The disclosure should be included in the Acknowledgments section or a dedicated section at the end of the manuscript. Authors must specify which GenAI tool was used and for what purpose (e.g., "The authors used ChatGPT-4 to refine the grammar and writing style of the initial draft of this manuscript").
5. Policy for Reviewers and Editors
- Manuscript Confidentiality: All submitted manuscripts are confidential documents. Reviewers and editors are strictly prohibited from uploading any part of a manuscript, review report, or correspondence letter into a GenAI tool. This action may violate data privacy and confidentiality rights.
- Human Assessment: The peer-review process and editorial decisions must be based on critical judgment and human expertise. GenAI should not be used to evaluate the quality or originality of a manuscript.
By implementing this policy, AIJST is committed to supporting technological innovation while upholding the highest standards of academic ethics and integrity.
