The Syiah Kuala Law Journal (SKLJ) acknowledges the potential and challenges posed by Generative AI (GenAI) technologies in scientific writing and publishing. To ensure integrity, transparency, and originality in every publication, the journal establishes the following policy:
1. Author Responsibilities
- Full Responsibility: Authors are fully responsible for all submitted content, including its accuracy, originality, and data integrity. The use of GenAI does not diminish this responsibility.
- Not an Author: GenAI tools, Large Language Models (LLMs), or other AI-assisted technologies cannot be listed as authors, co-authors, or contributors. Authorship and credit can only be attributed to human individuals who take full responsibility for the work.
2. Permissible Uses
- Language and Readability Improvement: Authors are permitted to use GenAI to refine the language, grammar, spelling, and flow of their manuscript. These tools can help in polishing an initial draft into a more fluid and professional text, provided that the substantial content remains the author's original work.
- References and Paragraphs: GenAI may be used to assist in searching for references or structuring paragraphs, but authors must ensure that any information, facts, and arguments generated by the AI have been accurately verified and correctly cited from their original sources.
3. Prohibited Uses
- Substantial Content Generation: GenAI must not be used to generate entire manuscripts, parts of a manuscript, abstracts, or conclusions without substantial contribution from the author.
- Data and Image Manipulation: The use of GenAI to create, falsify, or manipulate data, tables, or images (unless image manipulation is an explicit part of the research method) is strictly prohibited.
- Plagiarism: Authors must not copy or reproduce text generated by GenAI without clear disclosure, as this may be considered plagiarism.
4. Disclosure Obligation
- Mandatory Disclosure: Authors are required to disclose the use of GenAI in the preparation of their manuscript.
- Location of Disclosure: The disclosure should be included in the Acknowledgments section or a dedicated section at the end of the manuscript. Authors must specify which GenAI tool was used and for what purpose (e.g., "The authors used ChatGPT-4 to refine the grammar and writing style of the initial draft of this manuscript").
5. Policy for Reviewers and Editors
- Manuscript Confidentiality: All submitted manuscripts are confidential documents. Reviewers and editors are strictly prohibited from uploading any part of a manuscript, review report, or correspondence letter into a GenAI tool. This action may violate data privacy and confidentiality rights.
- Human Assessment: The peer-review process and editorial decisions must be based on critical judgment and human expertise. GenAI should not be used to evaluate the quality or originality of a manuscript.
By implementing this policy, Jurnal SKLJ is committed to supporting technological innovation while upholding the highest standards of academic ethics and integrity.
