Enhancing Mathematical Literacy and Student Engagement through Adventure Pocketbook Integrated with Ethnomathematics-based Problems

Abstract


Mathematical literacy is a needed skill. However, it is still low. One of the efforts that can be made is through student engagement. So, it is necessary to implement an adventure pocketbook integrated with ethnomathematics-based problems. The objectives of this study are (1) to test the effectiveness of the adventure pocketbook on student mathematical literacy, (2) to test the effect of student engagement on student mathematical literacy through the implementation of an adventure pocketbook, and (3) to describe student mathematical literacy in terms of student engagement through the implementation of adventure pocketbook. The research method used is quantitative research. The quantitative approach is an experimental design with a one-shot case study type. The instruments used were tests and questionnaires. The subject is grade 7 from one of junior high school at Semarang city, Indonesia The results showed that the adventure pocketbook integrated with ethnomathematics-based problems (1) effectively improved students' mathematical literacy, (2) student engagement can improve mathematical literacy with a significant influence of 80%, and (3) student engagement in the very high and high categories affected the average proficiency of the mathematical literacy test. This can be a learning innovation to improve student mathematical literacy and engagement.
