Application Syzygium cumini Leaves as Natural Dyes on Cotton Fabric
Abstract
Color makes everything more attractive, especially in clothes. Natural dye has an important role in the commercial dyeing batik industry and makes it has ethnic value, exclusive, and expensive. Syzygium cumini leaf is a natural resource that could be developed as a natural dye. This research seeks the potency of S. cumini leaf extract as an alternative batik dye that is more eco-friendly. Dyeing was carried out with the optimized dye extract on fixation with mordants. S. cumini leaf-dyed cotton fabrics were fixated by alum (KAl(SO4)2.I2H2O), slaked lime (Ca(OH)2), and ferrous sulphate (FeSO4). Dyed samples were identified by Red Green Blue (RGB) Color Chart Reader. The results showed color differences of the cotton fabrics in different mordant types during fixation. The unfixated cotton fabrics colored khaki (#F0E68C), gold (#FFD700) of alum-fixated, golden rod (#DAA520) of slaked lime-fixated, and darkslategray (#2F4F4F) of ferrous sulphate-fixated. Fastness properties for washing and light of S. cumini leaf have a good to excellent (4-5) fade endurance. The extract of S. cumini leaves has the potential for batik primary dye and needs to be introduced to society.
