Relationship between the level of depression and the risk of falling in the elderly people at UPTD Rumoh Seujahtera Geunaseh Sayang Banda Aceh

Abstract. The elderly people experience physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that can cause them to be depressed. Symptoms of depression can result in an increased risk of falling. The impact of the fall is injury, hospitalization, disability, and can cause death. This study aims to determine the relationship of depression rates with the risk of falling in the elderly people at UPTD Rumoh Seujahtera Geunaseh Sayang Banda Aceh. The research method used was observational analytic with cross sectional approach. The sampling technique is total sampling, obtained as many as 36 elderly respondents. Data is collected by using a questionnaire. Univariate analysis showed the majority of respondents had mild depression (44%) and a low risk (47.2%) for falls. Based on the Spearman Rank test showed p = 0,000 (p <0.05) with a positive correlation direction and the correlation coefficient value 0.692. This study concludes that there is an association between the level of depression and the risk of falling in the elderly people at UPTD Rumoh Seujahtera Geunaseh Sayang Banda Aceh.
