Effects of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) on Cognitive Function

Attika Dini Ardiana, Roman Ardian Goenarjo

Abstract

Introduction: Physical exercise has an important role in the prevention or treatment of cognitive impairment. High Intensity interval training is one of interval training modalities that offers an effective way to improve cognitive function.

Main Text: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) elicits a notable enhancement in cardiorespiratory function, specifically the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), thereby instigating alterations in cellular and molecular pathways. This exercise modulates cognitive function in the prefrontal cortex by eliciting alterations in the structural and functional plasticity of the brain, thereby enhancing cognitive abilities such as executive function, spatial memory, and learning. The enhancement of cognitive function can be attributed to the upregulation of specific molecular biomarkers, including BDNF, VEGF, IGF-1, and Irisin.

Conclusion: This review highlighted the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in overcoming cognitive impairment by enhancing neuroplasticity, which is facilitated by alterations in molecular biomarkers that directly influence the central nervous system.
