The Urgency of Regulating the Use of Personal Data for the Protection of Public Health in Indonesia

Abstract


This research aims to find the urgency to write the regulation about usage of personal data for public health. In this internet era, personal data is a vital component that needed to be protected. On the other hand, it also had this benefit for many purposes, including for public health..In 2022, Indonesia has passed a law regarding personal data protection, namely Undang-Undang No 17 tahun 2022 tentang Perlindungan Data Pribadi, that governing all matters about personal data..However, this law didn’t specified state the usage of personal data for public health. This article is a sociological-normative study, which observe the need for personal data in public health specifically for outbreak and took COVID-19 as example, equipped with comparison of countries that already have regulation about the usage of personal data for public health. The results shows that personal data has vital benefit for some condition in public health, especially for outbreak like COVID-19. It also shows that in countries that already have regulations regarding the usage of personal data for public health tend to be able to cope with the outbreak better.
